Owning and driving an automobile means taking on risks to yourself and others. When traffic accidents occur, there is a possibility of injuries, damages and loss, all of which are factors that may be inflicted upon you and others. Damage and loss of your property such as: theft, fire, vandalism and natural disasters are also risks factors to take into consideration when shopping for auto insurance. Auto insurance is designed to protect yourself and others against these risks. It is a contract between you and the insurer, specifying each parties’ rights and obligations. Essentially your insurer promises to provide specific coverage for you in return for your payment of premium.

The following basic coverages are available on most personal auto policies:

Comprehensive (other than collision): Covers your car for damage as a result of fire, theft, vandalism, animal contact, glass breakage and other specified perils.
Collision: Covers your car for damage sustained in an accident
Property Damage Liability: Covers accidental damage to other people’s property if caused by you in a car accident.
Bodily Injury Liability: Covers accidental injury or death of another person if caused by you in a car accident.
Medical Payments: Covers you and any passengers in your vehicle who sustain injury caused by an accident. Example of payments made would be for prescriptions, physician treatment and/or hospital treatment.
Uninsured Motorist: Covers injury suffered by you and any passengers in your vehicle against the uninsured motorist or hit-and-run driver.
Loss of Use: Provides a designated amount to be used for a rental car in the event your car needs to be repaired due to an accident/claim.
Towing & Labor: Reimbursement up to $50 in the event your personal auto needs to be towed.
